Our client, a mission-driven organization in the non-profit and healthcare sector, is seeking a
Senior Payroll Accountant to join their team. This role plays a critical part in ensuring payroll is processed accurately and on time while maintaining compliance with state and federal laws. The Senior Payroll Accountant will also support the Controller and CFO and assist with month-end close, reconciliations, and payroll system enhancements.
Senior Payroll Accountant Responsibilities: - Process payroll for hourly and salaried employees in compliance with policies and regulations
- Verify payroll data, including hours worked, tax information, direct deposits, and pay adjustments
- Ensure wage garnishments, deductions, and tax withholdings are correctly calculated and submitted
- Conduct payroll reconciliations and journal entries for each pay period and month-end close
- Manage payroll exceptions, troubleshoot discrepancies, and provide employee assistance
- Maintain payroll records, including W-4 forms, timesheets, and audit documentation
- Configure UKG (Ultimate Kronos Group) payroll system and oversee updates related to tax laws and W-2 changes
- Process retro-pay transactions, severance payouts, and death benefits
- Work with management to ensure IRS filings (W-2s, quarterly returns) and State of Illinois reports are submitted accurately
- Oversee PTO setup and tracking to align with company policies
Senior Payroll Accountant Requirements: - Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required
- 5-10 years of payroll processing experience preferred
- Experience in non-profit and/or healthcare industries preferred
- Strong understanding of GAAP and statutory accounting principles
- Advanced Excel proficiency (PivotTables, VLOOKUPs) required
- CPA preferred but not required
